I think you're right that it may be a 'teachable moment' for Democratic candidates thinking about triangulatin' with SS. Maybe even one they can use to generate support - much like the social safety net interest groups and organizations who are generating support and attention over opposition to the President's proposal; much of it fueled by the hair-fires ignited on the left.
Certainly the MSM doesn't give a damn about the cpi . . .
