It seems that any organization involved in the wielding of power, influence and money is ipso facto corrupt. As a DUer pointed out in the recent Pope Wars, the Church is worth roughly 500 billion (but we'll never know will we?) and if it actually gave a damn about "the poor" (that bone they throw to those who keep the collection plate full) it could end poverty TOMORROW. If the Democrats wanted to save social security, they would fight for raising the cap. Name any issue and the same is true. Those are just promises and flowery rhetoric for the little people, so we will BELIEVE, so we will donate and work to further enrich and consolidate the power of these people who have anything but that on their agenda.
Just as with the presidency, does anyone really believe any more that a liberal, populist reformer could have possibly risen to the highest rank in either of these corrupt institutions? Do you think the very same people who installed Ratzinger would then turn around and elect a true liberal? When it costs nearly a billion dollars to run for the presidency, does anyone think the candidate doesn't have to make deals with the devil? Why are people even surprised? Did you really fall for the marketing?
So the question remains, is reform from within even possible? I ask this in all sincerity as I find it hypocritical to ask people to leave their religious tradition if I'm not willing to leave my long-held affiliations as well. And no, I have not mentioned Republicans because they are so rotten they make themselves sick from the stench.
