I knew that Juarez was dangerous...As I recall, something like 200 women murdered
in a matter of a couple years?...Hideous. I also knew they had a kidnap for ransom
thing going on in Mexico, in fact there was a very interesting documentary on tv about
a year ago...It concerned a middle class couple, he was Mexican, an architect I believe,
and she was an American, a schoolteacher, I think.
Anyway, they went down to live -- not in Juarez, but a chi chi expat haven -- San Miguel
Allende, I think, and he was kidnapped and held for ransom. He did survive, but it was a terrible
ordeal for both. It's why I roll my eyes when I hear of these middle class American retirees
planning to go to San Miguel Allende, thinking they're going to some paradise. As I recall,
the documentary indicated that there are many kidnappings there that don't get reported
by the mainstream media.
