(8,994 posts)Aside from the ugly shock waves that can travel for light years, supernovas also generate huge gamma radiation bursts (GRB's) that shoot out from the star's north and south poles. Those have a much longer lethal range. A star like Betelgeuse could unleash a GRB that could easily hit Earth and cause another extinction event... unless our scientists are right and its jets won't blow this way.
