and if there IS a GRB, they travel at the speed of light so we will get hit with it about the same time the visible wavelengths get to us so there really is nothing we can do...besides, where in the universe can you go to hide from a GRB? Nowhere. They can come from anywhere in the sky...at any time really. Who knows...we pack up and leave here, only to land on a habitable world that is awash in gamma rays very soon after we land...THAT would be a great ending to a movie! Kinda like that Nicholas Cage thing a couple of years back with the alien/angels that take the kids...

Hale Bopp was one of those once in a lifetimes....also the Leonids back in 2000.

When Hale-Bopp as visible over San Francisco, we also had a lunar eclipse.

Betelgeuse is actually closer to us, current best estimate is 700 light years or so..
