(53,339 posts)49. NOT being able to talk can be very frustrating
When I was in an ICU with a metal tracheostomy tube in my neck I'd been given a plastic urinal jug. The nurse didn't come back for it after I used it, so I wedged it standing up between my legs and went to sleep. I must have rolled over in the morning, because the bed--and I--were suddenly drenched. After going into the bathroom to clean up and change into fresh pajamas I returned to find that the nurse had added a new entry to my chart: "Incontinent 1000 cc's." As much as I wanted to explain to the nurse and correct the record (I did NOT wet the bed, dammit!!!), I couldn't say a word because of the trache.

OP
Probably the only reason he cannot talk now is because of the tube they have down his throat.

"...according to a source familiar with the case." That's a red flag right there.

I could tell you a very personal story. Injured people sometimes do strange things.
