I would say that not since 1972 has there been a Democratic nominee or a candidate for the Democratic nomination who actually came at all close to winning the Democratic nomination who was driven by the New Deal and Great Society vision of pushing forward and expanding social democracy. Even Mondale in in 84 and Dukakis in 88 who both had New Deal backgrounds - were NOT running on a platform to expand the New Deal and the Great Society - they were running on a platform to basically hold the line or minimize cutbacks. This contrast sharply with the LBJ in 64 or Humphrey in 68 or McGovern in 72 who in spite of their fundamental split over the Vietnam war - all three of them called for eradicating poverty and creating the just society.
