Since only a tiny fraction of the firearms in existence are used improperly a universal background check requirement will have a negligible impact on the further reduction of their improper use
Accurate data regarding the use of firearms for self defense is impossible to obtain unless you know a way to determine how many people ended a potential assault by brandishing a gun without firing it or reporting it to the police or how many assailants decided not to initiate an assault because they thought they might get shot.
