maintains the consistency of his performance to maintain his persona as a super-magician, even though it drives a wedge between himself and his beloved wife, who doesn't know it is his twin brother, whom no one knows about, who is dallying with Charlotte Johansson.

It is commitment to one's role--and for a professional whose job requires the donning of a mask, it seems to me to be a reasonable way to maintain one's professional career, since it was not for all that long, after all.
