(20,226 posts)A small town preacher's son who became the state high school debating champion and then grew up to be a bona fide World War II hero - with a record attested to by every single member of his crew - then when on to be a seminary student and a Methodist Minister for a short while before going back and getting his PHD in history and then returning to teach American history at his undergraduate alma mater - Dakota Wesleyan University - Then single handedly rebuilding the South Dakota Democratic Party and becoming the first Democrat to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in a generation then appointed to a cabinet level position by John F. Kennedy to establish the Food for Peace program and then becoming the first Democrat from South Dakota to be elected to the U.S. Senate for a generation. George McGovern's life story sounds so patriotic and so small town America - it's hard to believe there was ever anyone that good, wholesome, patriotic and decent. But the goons - including some in the Democratic Party establishment managed to turn him into the very symbol of the absolute opposite of everything he really was in real life.
