Who will vouchsafe that I died
a natural death?

Who's crying voice will be heard in my town?
Who will put on a black tie
and leave the gate ajar?

Who will be the good friend
will die with me,
if only a little bit?

Who will lie an "Our Father"
and there but for the Grace of God ...
think to himself?

Who will care for my dog?
Who will pay my funeral
and a metal cross?

Which of all my lovers
will buy flowers
for my funeral?

Who will empty my pockets?
Who will settle my debts?

Who will end my diary
when the last page in my calendar falls?

Who will speak between sobs?
Who will kiss my eyes closed
to give them light?

Who will pray to my memory,
God rest his soul,
and toast to my health?

Who will make my corn bread?
Who will put on my coat
next December?

Who will be the new owner
of my house and my dreams
and my wicker chair?

Who I rummage my drawers?
Who will read my songs
with morbid pleasure?

Who will lie in my bed,
with my pajamas
and look after my wife,

who will bring a chrysanthemum
the first of November?
to my grave ...

Who will end my diary
when the last page in my calendar falls?
