(1,805 posts)we've had two suicides on my side of the family, two on my husband's side. None had anything to do with their education or their skills. My grandfather shot himself in the 1950s when a business deal went bad and my uncle (his son) killed himself just two years later because he was gay. The 50s were def NOT a good time to be gay.
My brother in law had been drinking at an Angel game with his wife and some friends. Got up, left the stadium and walked straight onto the freeway - this was in the 80s. We never were clear on his motive but he went to Vietnam twice and was never the same.
My nephew had a bad drinking problem and walked into traffic on Highway 1 in Central California - this was in the 90s.
None of these had anything to do with education, skills or the state of the economy, so I think we should be careful who or what we blame for a disturbed person as the four in our family.
I wouldn't be so quick to blame the current financial climate for this poor man's death. Had he seen a therapist? Was he on any kind of anti-depressants? There are always a lot of questions when it comes to suicide.
