It's the answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything.

Of course, the difference between how you phrased it and Douglas Adams is irrelevant because as Adams observed, any understanding of a universal purpose would result in the universe automagically reconfiguring itself into something even more mind-boggling. (Or something like that.)

My favorite Douglas Adams idea was his answer to the question, "What is dark matter?" His answer was: Dark matter is composed of the accumulation of all the packing materials for all the scientific instrumentation designed to study dark matter. A perfect answer, IMHO.
