28. Graceland must really fry Fred's hide

Elvis has been dead 36 years, and he was a shadow of his former self for many, many years before that. (Elvis fans used to say, when The King was still alive, that someone should lock Vegas White Jumpsuit Elvis in a room with a pile of his old records so he can remember how great he used to be.) But people still love them some Elvis - Elvis records still sell well. His movies haven't fared as well, but most of his movies were terrible when they were new and they haven't gotten better with age.

Fred isn't dead yet, although you can't really tell just by looking at him, but he may be the most hated person in America. The one thing everyone, at all points of the political and religious spectrum, can agree on is that Fred Phelps is the meanest, most worthless piece of shit in the known universe. When Fred dies and goes to hell, every gay person in America will descend upon Topeka to protest his funeral...and then we'll hear no more from the Phelps cult. It will probably dissolve within six months without the patriarch to keep everyone in line.

Dead and still loved, versus hated in life and soon to be forgotten. Which would you rather be?
