The software installs from "the cloud". In other words, you download the programs to your computer and then install them. I checks online periodically to make sure that you have a valid license, but other than that, it doesn't need to be connected to the Internet. You can go up to 3 months without being connected to the Internet without a service disruption. After that, you need to connect again for it to re-verify your license.
I've been using the cloud version on my desktop and laptop for quite a while now and it really doesn't work any differently than when I was buying and upgrading the boxed versions. Other than how I pay for it, I don't notice any difference in how it works.
