Diplomatic service CAN be dangerous
Diplomats KNOW this BEFORE they accept an assignment
ANYONE should have realized that 9-11 will always have "significance" to "that part of the world"...(to the ones who wish us harm, and want us OUT of their country)

I am not saying that the deaths were caused by the diplomats, BUT a better plan would be to have as many as possible perhaps attend a "seminar" in ...maybe Italy...or Spain..or anywhere NOT in that region, for that 9-11 timeframe.. Leave the outposts to the locals who assist the diplomats.

Traveling around the country at that time was a risky thing to do, protests or no protests.

Diplomacy is always hit and miss at best, and deadly sometimes.

As for Hicks....he sought out republican congresspeople because he knew they would give him a political platform for his angst..

He deliberately dragged raw meat around, and of course the junkyard dogs followed him home. He was insubordinate, since he did not follow proper channels.

Maybe he thought no one would hear him out..

He chose his own path, and sometimes demotions come along with "independent" choices like he made.
