(31,454 posts)Let's face it, the teabagger element is the most influential at the moment, and the element that formerly sane legislators are now deathly afraid of. Other democrats have been savaged by the GOP, but I can't ever recall any of them being asked to "show their papers". Some, even in his second term, are still convinced that he's not a native born American, and therefore illegitimate.
Kennedy, Carter, and Clinton certainly suffered indignities, but their parentage was never up for doubt & ridicule. There were even some "Democrats" who made race an issue. If you recall, gerry Ferraro made the comment that "he's only where he is, because he's black". She as much as called him an Affirmative Action hire. That's certainly a different take for most of us who are African American, but that was/is the thinking of many white folks, on both sides of the aisle, and yes it is indeed racist thinking.
