tom coburn's medical career [View all]
so, having forgotten (if I ever knew), what tommy's medical degree is in, I found this:
. . . .
After recovering from an occurrence of malignant melanoma, Coburn pursued a medical degree and graduated from the University of Oklahoma Medical School with honors in 1983. He then opened a medical practice in Muskogee, Oklahoma and served as a deacon in a Southern Baptist Church. Coburn is one of three medical doctors currently serving in the U.S. Senate. During his career in obstetrics, he has treated over 15,000 patients, delivered 4,000 babies and was subject to one malpractice lawsuit, which was dismissed without finding Coburn at fault.[6][7] Coburn and his wife are members of First Baptist Church of Muskogee.
. . . . . .
now, if he got his degree in 83, and got elected to the house in 94--that means he practiced for about ten years. if my rough math is correct, that means he saw roughly 1,500 patients per year, or about 5 per day, every day except sunday (because, of course, he spent sunday in church, yes?). and the 4,000 babies-- 400 per year, 1.5 per day, roughly. wow, busy boy.
I guess my question to medical types here on DU--are these figures normal? do a lot of ob's deliver 4,000 babies in ten years, see 15,000 patients?
