(8,784 posts)It was harder than anyone can imagine. I guess because it was unexpected. The cancer had already traveled to his lungs. I had taken him in for a teeth cleaning the previous week and he seemed fine. After I brought him home, I started noticing changes in his behavior. Not eating, etc. I took him back to the vet and they did x-rays and discovered a mass on his spleen. The cancer he had is aggressive and fast. It might have been found if we had done x-rays earlier but who does full body x-rays for a teeth cleaning. I think I am still in shock. Last week I took my other Golden in for a teeth cleaning and this time I had a full body x-ray taken. She is fine. I am now so paranoid that whenever my dogs go to have their teeth cleaned I am going to have a full x-ray taken.
I can honestly say that Murphy and I did not have a chance in hell once the tumor(s) were discovered. I held him in his final moments --- looking him straight in the eyes. I was the last thing he ever saw and it was beyond painful for me.
