He had a book coming out in '12 and took a harder "Right" turn, while there was a mood swing among Rethug congress critters to make some kind of deal, besides the harped upon drumbeat that they had to reach out to Hispanics. So his book came out hard line, which was harder line than he had been in the past, then he had to back track.

But the danger about him (and Shrub) is that their Texas identity means some kind of rapport with Hispanics, despite that their Rethug philosophy is hostile to Hispanics, the ability to hug, speak a few Spanish words, smile and have mariachis in the background. But Jeb Crow Shrub speaks EXCELLENT Spanish (unlike Shrub, who got 40% of Hispanic voting), is married to a naturalized Citizen born in Mexico.

That said, it is a myth that speaking Spanish is much of a plus for Hispanic voters. Those who vote are as sophisticated as anybody else. It's more of NOT BEING HOSTILE, than Spanish words. The real problem is that the vast majority of Hispanics DON'T VOTE at all. LBJ and the Black Civil rights movement were focused on VOTING, and the African American community is organized and mobilized about voting, unlike Hispanics.
