In reply to the discussion: I've known a LOT of cops [View all]kag
(4,204 posts)I actually had an "experience" with a cop that has colored my view, but I've also read local news reports of many others. In my own case, I was given a speeding ticket. I wouldn't have thought twice about it, except that I knew for a fact that I wasn't speeding. When I showed up at court to fight it, and was shown the ticket, the cop had written down that I had said something that implied that I had admitted guilt. I was furious, but it was my word against his and his partner's. Who's a judge gonna believe? I actually fought the ticket in court and won, but I had to spend a lot more money fighting it than I would have paying the ticket. My husband, who supported me through the whole ordeal, said it was a matter of my mental health, and it truly was. To this day I don't trust this city's cops any further than I can throw them.
Our county sheriffs are great. State troopers--I've had great experiences. Cops in surrounding smaller towns, I've been helped by several. But in this particular city, I steer WAAAAAYYYYY clear.
I think there are some departments that just generate a culture of "Anyone who isn't a cop is a criminal."
