It's what made "Vote for the worst" so successful
(note-they are a site that for 12 years on American Idol has implored its readers to mass vote for the worst person on the show and has caused people with no talent to advance to a much higher rank.
One reason that the Voice has a totally different system, and more heavily relies on actual sales of songs on ITunes (so that one has to actually spend money, not just text for free).

Politically it is the same.
