24. This is not unheard of. During my career, two officers I worked with were killed at ambush.

There aren't that many law enforcement officers killed each year, approx. 150 is the number that comes to mind, but it's particularly hard to bear when one is gunned down simply because of the uniform.
My guess is that the murderer did not know who he/she was shooting.
