(1,227 posts)but with over 50 lbs of weight loss. (as a Santa Claus, I had a fair amount of cushion) but toward the end, the lack of taste caused everything to trigger my gag reflex. Drs admonished me to consider it "food as medicine"; I countered with "even medicine has a taste". Anyway, just after I finished the 7 weeks of radiation and chemo, I realized that I was seemingly quite happily starving myself to death and approached my medical oncologist about a feeding tube which was installed that same day. I haven't regained all of my weight, but some, and strength and stamina are improving. Taste is better; but nothing tastes quite right....even water. Santa's beard, alas!, is gone and I don't think it will return, so guess I will have to be a yak hair Santa now.
I had not heard the two year significance. Radiologist did say the prognosis was good for this type of cancer (P16 positive?) and there was a high probability that I would be finished with it after treatment.
I, too had the thought about the connection between taste and weight control. I can see now that I have probably never eaten just because I was hungry rather I eat for the joy of food.
Congrats on making the 2 years ! And glad you are doing well, praise FSM. I got more information from this thread than was provided by Drs, very happy I saw it.
