(17,423 posts)You know what, commit a crime, and see how long it would be for the authorities to show cause to a judge that Verizon turn over your phone records to a prosecutor. Hell, it may not even need to be a crime, they might even subpoena those in a Divorce proceeding. How about your bank records. Do you think if investigators came to a judge with probable cause you were dealing drugs, or committing bank fraud, they wouldn't get your records so fast your head would spin?
This is the same damn thing. The government would still need to present probable cause to a federal court to use any of those records.
I would like that the government didn't need to do this, but I also would like to know that if some asshats planned to blow up the NYC Subway system, we might be able to track them down.
OMG! The next thing you know, we'll find out that the USPS keeps track of the mail we send.
