Terry Gross interviewed Shane Harris, author of "The Watchers: The Rise of America's Surveillance [View all]

State" today. I caught most of the interview on the radio on the way back from town this morning. It was ever so much more informative than the massive amount gobblety gook shrouded in screaming here on DU, especially for someone how is not well grounded in the ins and outs of the technology. Shane Harris lined the evolution of the technology to its applications and the law. I came away from listening to that program feeling a little less adrift in the great nanouniverse. What I brought with me was how much more oversight the military needs and how much our lazy assed Congress has contributed to this mess through allowing special interests in the IT industry and the military to lead them around by their noses. Beyond that, it is easier to slap bandaids on something rather than sit down and construct legislation that is cohesive and workable.

I really detest Congress even more and I believe that the military and intelligence communities are out of control.
