(1,388 posts)how "holy" sports are in a lot of towns about America. Sports trumps education and morality. It is disgusting. And it follows through to college sports and to professional sports. I do not have to cite all the incidents of college athletes who have been caught in these kinds of acts and not punished. Or if they are punished and kicked out of school, some other school "has it in their heart" to forgive them so they can get a better player for the team. The big stadiums at colleges are monuments to the unintelligent. Of course people will say "the college would not have as much money without our football or basketball", but so what. The waste of all this money on coaches, and scholarships to kids who have not the ability to even spell football keeps other deserving students the chanced they deserve. And in the professional sphere it only gets worse. After Katrina the first thing that was done was to rebuild the football stadium!! In Jacksonville the city is spending money on a stadium rejuvenation at a cost to taxpayers of almost $40 million and at the same time are closing about 6 libraries to save about $2.6 million.
The priorities of sports in America is pathetic. The above examples pale compared to the sexual assaults on women, and men, by these so called athletes. Morality, out the window. Ethics, out the window. Education, out the window. Gotta have the best jocks regardless of how they behave, especially if the jocks are related to important people. And then the cover ups start. Instigated by the adults and parents. And the victim blaming. Then when judicial hearings start, they plead down to lesser charges or get 15 to testify for immunity to convict one. I am so angry I have to stop before saying things I should not.
