Do they understand death? Maybe. Do they fear it? Probably not.

They do understand changes in their pack/family. They modify their behavior in the face of those changes.

Emotionally, I don't think my dogs will miss me as much as I will miss them...but in their own ways they might and that is part of the magic of the relationships.
