Oh, is that the sense that fits your wordview?

Primarily, its because thats an existing voting block of people most likely to vote for them (where the brainless they most appeal to congregate). Its much more difficult to convince the discerning on the left to support bad ideas (nonetheless, the current Democratic leadership is doing so with skill).
