(9,126 posts)I was a very large department manager by the time I was 20. I moved up through the buying office and into store design very quickly. I stayed because I was moving fast and making so much money, I figured I would keep the job until I was bored before starting grad school. But I went through three rounds of brutal layoffs both on the store side and middle management. It was like watching people be guillotined. They were such assholes about it, you never knew if you were going to be fired, but if you came into the office and couldn't log onto your computer in the morning, you were toast. People who had been working there the longest, we're talking decades, were always axed and there was literally a funeral dirge heard along the cubicle hallways. Wails and moans and crying, the betrayal for hard work and loyalty. I thought I was going to go insane so I left. I rarely shop in department stores for the reasons everyone is sighting, but whenever I go into them, it's a ghost town.
