(46,416 posts)noticed that among everyone in the waiting area, I was pretty much the only one that didn't have a smart-phone/iphone dealie to play with. Everyone was playing with their touch screens, and I sat and looked out at the tarmacs and runways and pondered as to why, with such a terrible economy, seemingly everyone else can afford not only to upgrade but to pay more for the data plans. And then I wondered if there was something wrong with ME (and my 5 year old phone that flips open), that maybe I am voluntarily allowing myself to be left out of the latest technology, that I am not keeping up with everyone else. So I think it's fear or insecurity, more than greed or instant gratification--you see people who look like you (NOT rich people, just average folks) who have WAYY better shit than you, drive newer nicer cars, have nicer houses with the granite and three car garages, and the latest gizmos, and you think: I can't afford this shit--I must be doing something wrong.
