A dumb-fuck, racist, sexist, homophobic GOP politician need only appeal to 50% +1 of his or her own constituents. A business, on the other hand, cannot possibly afford to lose 50% -1 of its market share, or anywhere near that much. Also, businesses generally advertise to a much broader base than any single politicians constituency.

Paula and Rush had to be dumped for their sponsors to survive. On the other hand, a racist politician, no matter how detestable he or she may be to the nation at large, can only be dumped by his or her own constituents, a majority of whom very likely support the racist, sexist, homophobic views off their representative.
