We know he shot; he's not contesting that. Murder in the second degree, under Florida law, refers to a killing carried out without premeditation but with a depraved mind regardless of human life, so his 'intention' or state of mind must be proved by the state, beyond a reasonable doubt. That's why 'self-defense' is an important element of the case.
