(61,033 posts). . . I take that back. We've never been a true democracy, a republic with representation for the landed gentry(white males only at the beginning) maybe, but never a democracy. That's just the propaganda we've all come to accept.
Now Washington is more political theater than a functioning legislative body. It's in stalemate and can't get anything done.
The spying by the NSA has been going on since when, the Patriot Act? The technology genie makes it possible and you can't really put the genie back in the bottle.
New legislation has to be crafted to limit what information can be gathered and stored but, like I said, the genie is out of the bottle and it's not going to stop. Hell, even corporations are storing info on everyone that orders something online. Next time you order something see if ads for similar products don't start popping up on your computer screen.
Congress actually legalized this crap back in the Bush admin so it's up to Congress to try to minimize it. That is if they can actually get something passed through both the House and Senate.
