4. I was thinking that maybe The Wild Wild West plotline comes into play here...

there was an episode starring Michael Dunn as Miguelito Loveless wherein he paints pictures and is able to enter the scene and escape from the Secret Service agents pursuing him. It was GREAT...one of their best ever.

Maybe Bush and Bremer are trying to escape into the Universe which they've painted.
