(100,132 posts)In college she was president of the Wellesley College Young Republicans, which was a Rockefeller-Republican oriented group. Later (still in college) she stepped down as her views changed regarding the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. In her junior year, she worked for the presidential nomination of anti-war Democrat Eugene McCarthy, of whom you have probably heard.

College is a time of growth for many people -- it was for her. She came from a mainline Republican family, which her early youth reflects. In college she grew.
Sorry, that's probably taking it farther than you intended. I just went on a riff about Hillary, who is my age and whom I admire, even though I am not particularly rooting for her to run for POTUS.
