(28,784 posts)but it's not worth bothering with some people.
I don't have everyone who disagrees with me on ignore.
I DO have people on ignore who claimed that support for whistle blowing was equal to racism. That's one of the most disgusting attacks I have ever read here and, frankly, imo, this place would be better off if those who made it were tossed.
Whenever I saw someone make this argument - I put them on ignore. I'm sure not all who did this are included in my ignore list, tho.
The irony in this moment is that African-Americans were among those who supported whistle blowing -- this reality indicates the stupidity and worthlessness such an argument.
Attacks that claim white people are not loyal Democratic voters now that Obama is in office is another stupid tactic. To ignore that Obama was voted into office by a majority comprised of the white people who voted for him is to shit on the Democratic coalition. But that, too, is another claim made here.
In some people's zeal to smear people here who disagree with them, they smear the majority of Democratic voters.
If the actual goal is to elect Democrats, those who have done this sort of crap have to understand and accept that people are put off by such "us vs. them" lies, and understand that not all Democrats are "party before principle" Democrats.
There are going to be people who disagree with what the party does, no matter who the leader is, and those people will be vocal about it, often. A smarter tactic would be to simply ignore much of what is said in this vein and let people vent their frustration. A little empathy, too, is a very useful tactic to let people know you understand their view of an issue.
Posts that indicate the good things Democrats have accomplished, with a realistic admission that those in power are not as far to the left as many life-long Democrats, is another useful tactic - because it's honest. The reality is that those in power are more protective of others with power. You can't pretend this isn't true and have much credibility.
I'm saying this as someone who comes down on the "principle before party" side - but also as someone who doesn't think I have to take one side or another on this current issue here - because I want more information.
But when "party before principle" Democrats attack people who have come down on the other side - they're also attacking those who feel they don't have enough information - and that alienates those who are also party voters.
I'm concerned that those who are doing the attacking are dissuading people from voting at all. It's easy and honest to make an argument that, at the very least, a vote for a Democrat is a vote to keep out Republican judges and other appointees. To attack those who are able to align with Democrats for this reason, because they're not all about the party, is the way to lose votes. Are people here posting this shit trying to lose votes for Democrats? Or are they just unable to accept that others will have another opinion and yet still be able to vote for the party that will do less harm?
Those that I have on ignore here don't seem to be able to discuss an issue honestly. They resort to insults and attack the person on the other side of a dispute - this isn't limited to the current situation. There are people who have been here a long time who have made it a way of life to attack others when their own arguments cannot stand up to facts. Occasionally, I have taken the same tactic to that person so they can know what it's like, but it doesn't change the way they do things - so it's better, to me, if they just don't exist here.
Some people are not worth your time, iow.
