Deaths of bomb-sniffing dogs bound for Afghanistan trigger lawsuit

Last year, 14 bomb-sniffing dogs were tabbed to go to Afghanistan to assist U.S. forces.

...

The dogs - with names such as Rex, Kimbo and Albert - didn't even make it off the ground in Houston, according to an article in the Houston Chronicle.

When the highly trained dogs could not be placed on the same flight, they were held back a day to go together as a team. The company entrusted with transporting the dogs told the owners they would be boarded overnight at the firm's nearby kennel, the Chronicle reports.

Instead, they spent the night in a seal, unventilated refrigerated truck, where they died.

A lawsuit filed in Houston on behalf of the dogs' owners, a Florida-based company, states that at least two of the crates in the truck were damaged, indicating the dogs tried in vain to escape, the paper reports.
