The idea of settling disputes using a jury of 12 impartial witnesses is usually dated back to King Aethelred's Wantage code of 933, although some scholars point out that the English jury system that emerged in the 12th century was almost identical to the Islamic Lafif, which the Normans may have brought from Sicily.
