The problem from the beginning in this case was the quality of the jury pool. In the first place, so much pre-trial publicity contaminated the pool. There was no way an impartial jury was to be found in that town. The prosecution should have moved for a change of venue. Secondly is the inherent racism that exists in the south. And the prosecution in their post-verdit statement was quite wrong; this was always about race. Thirdly, the prosecution didn't do a very good job of objecting to testimony that was improper. Non-trained individuals testifying about psychological matters, for example. Conversely, they failed to follow up and expand inculpatory testimony.
All together, it resulted in ineffective prosecution and a biased jury, both of which operated in Zim's favor.
The whole thing disgusts me.
