(2,150 posts)Back in the sixties I traveled there by bus from Chicago to visit with my mom and new stepfather. When I got to the station in Sanford I spoke with a black man and called him "Mister". By the time I arrived home by taxi the word had traveled to my mom and stepdad that I had committed some kind of crime by using the word "Mister" to address a black man. I was verbally chastised by them. I have to say I never completely knew how incredibly prejudiced my mom was until then. It broke my heart. I was so sickened by the experience that it tore me to shreds inside my soul. I have to say that I've never forgiven them for this. Her new husband was a high priest in the Mormon church. At the time... and maybe forever at this point, Mormons were very prejudiced against the darker races.
