Unfortunately all the time I'm reminded of my own status privilege. Badly though some of the rednecks around here treat me at times, I can still get away with a lot more than if I had a better tan. I even talk back to certain cops I don't like and they can't do a blessed thing about it, and I know they know it. Not that I take advantage, but I've made it clear what I'll do if they try anything illegal. I even told the local chief of police (he has one deputy, a good one) that unless the law absolutely required him to come in my yard, he's not welcome and he'd better call ahead to arrange a phone appointment if he wants to talk to me about anything. I've even gone to town council meetings to raise polite hell about certain things, and that's clearly just the first step. They don't like me too much, but they've learned not to overstep either. Could my best friend from L.A. come out here and behave like that? Not if she wanted to stay free, she couldn't.
