Spain presents a letter of apology to Bolivia for the incident with President Morales's Plane

15 Jul 2013

The Spanish ambassador in Bolivia, Angel Vazquez, presented a letter to the Bolivian government to express its apologies for the incident with the plane of President Evo Morales which occurred on 2 July.

The letter was presented by the Ambassador of Spain in La Paz, Ángel Vázquez, who deplored the conduct of his colleague in Vienna, Alberto Carnero, who wanted to inspect Morales plane to see if he was traveling with Snowden, who was wanted by the United States for divulging classified information.

"We are sorry for the incident, we present our apologies for that behavior, which was not appropriate and placed the president in a difficult situation", creating a "situation difficult and improper towards a chief of State".

For its part, France also reiterated its "will to overcome misunderstandings" that may have arisen after the incident with the Bolivian presidential plane, which was prevented from flying over French airspace suspecting it of transporting the former agent CIA Edward Snowden.

"France reiterates its willingness to overcome misunderstandings that may have arisen and our desire to continue the dialogue and cooperation with both Bolivia and Mercosur as a whole," said the spokesman of French Foreign Minister, Philippe Lalliot.

We are very regretful of the inconveniences that the president had to endure, the discomfort in which he found himself and also the annoyance he felt, which he has expressed vividly in recent days," the ambassador added.

LA PAZ, July 16 — Spain today voiced regret at its diplomatic row with Bolivia, sparked when President Evo Morales’ plane was blocked from Spanish airspace over suspicions US fugitive Edward Snowden was on the jet.

“Spain deeply regrets this and is sorry that it happened. We offer our apology and consider the matter closed,” Spain’s Ambassador to La Paz Miguel Angel Vasquez said after delivering a written note to the Foreign Ministry.
