(318 posts)The thing is that while the rest of the world moved on, racism is still embedded in the South. It's not just about the Right Wing propaganda machine that spews out its bile every hour of every day, it's also about the fact that racism is alive and well behind the facade of "Southern Charm." Paula Deen, for instance, is typical of the what I'm talking about.
Interestingly, Obama's election in '08 seemed to give them "permission" to be more overtly racist. That event seemed to irritate and upset people so much that they began to *say* things that they had closeted away for years for fear of reprisal. But after the election, first came the jokes. Then, the Tea Party. And now we have people supporting the murder of an innocent child.
It's very much 1858 in this nation. A polarization so severe that ... And I, who have lived in the West since 1985, feel like an abolitionist from the "Nawth" while the rest of my family are Southern Plantation owners. Never the t'wain shall meet.
By the way, I disowned them a few years ago. But that means that I don't have a home-place anymore, because I won't go back.
