(951 posts)I was considering Florida as a possible retirement choice. A liberal area of course. I am from the west coast, Bay Area to be exact, and have property in Arizona, another conservative area, which I am selling.
I live in Rich, Va., and was surprised by how much old hostility still lingers. For years the text books reflected a southern version of events, and some was just downright lies. The monuments all around are a statement to the mentality that predominated here. This town is mostly AA so the politics have changed. Up until the thirties, the KKK was still quite active in large numbers in this state. I think WW2 helped break them up as they were sent overseas and "minorities" were enlisted to move and fuel the war machine. My ancestors were originally from Virginia and were driven out for educating slaves. But we do not talk a lot about the role that type of persecution played in shaping the south, but it is an integral part of the history here. It was ugly and vicious.
