(11,816 posts)Whenever I've reported for jury duty, the jury pool was 99% white, even though the county is 9% black. All-white juries can't be good for justice.
I got randomly picked (by juror number) for an (all white) jury where the defendant was black, and the defendant pleaded as soon as he saw the jury.
The person in charge told us that "often when defendants see the jury file in, the reality hits them and they're ready to plead".
I was thinking "often when defendants see the all-white jury file in, the reality hits them and they're ready to plead."
Seminole County is 10% black, and I wonder how closely the jury pool reflected that racial makeup. But you're not going to get a balanced jury if only white people are showing up for jury duty.
I don't know why jury pools, in my area at least, are so white - whether it reflects differing attitude about jury service, the ability to get a time off work (without losing pay), transportation issues, the frequency with which people move, less frequent car/home/voter registrations or what. (In our county, they issue based on a wider range of sources beyond driver's licenses and voter registration, but I'm not sure what they use)
