Even if he is justified using force, he did not need the added problem of killing them if he could stop the attack with anything less. This is probably why his co-worker tried to get him to stop?
I don't know what happens when a person snaps like that. Blind rage. Uncontrollable. Over-the-top. But technically self-defense. I don't normally believe men should strike women, so it is hard to see the rage expressed there. No one -- man or woman -- should try to provoke such a reaction from another person. It is really provoking our reptilian brainstem, and the response is not always controllable.
In some ways, what you see there reminds me of how domestic violence escalates so quickly from verbal abuse to deadly force.

I'm far more inclined to trust the attacked employer as to when he felt he was no longer in danger.
