Considering the massive size of the Reef and that they were running low on fuel, it sounds like they picked a deep channel where there was little to no chance of damage to the reef itself. It was a joint training exercise, and it sounds like the Americans are going to retrieve the bombs. I have a fair bit of criticism of management and protection of the Reef, but this isn't something I'm understanding outrage over...

To give an idea of the size of the Reef and the area that's World Heritage listed, here's some info:

Just how big is the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park?

Covering 344,400km2 Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is:

•bigger than Victoria and Tasmania combined
•bigger than the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland combined
•roughly the same area as Japan, Germany, Malaysia or Italy
•approximately half the size of Texas
•slightly smaller than the entire Baltic Sea.

btw, I visited the Great Barrier Reef a few months ago for the first time in my life, and it's a beautiful part of the world. I'd been other places in the world that were amazing and never realised that something so awe-inspiring was in my own backyard
