19. The problem, geologically speaking, with Japan

is that Japan is riddled with land-based faults and is straddling several tectonic plates-- that's why it's so seismically active over here. The plates, for example, are constantly pushing against one another, and when there is sufficient pressure in a section, then one of the plates slips, causing an earthquake.
