In reply to the discussion: Jaw-droppingly racist quote from an HOA board representative in my newspaper [View all]mountain grammy
(29,088 posts)One winter, when my aunt and uncle were visiting, my aunt, a lifetime New Yorker (emigrated from Poland with my grandparents at age 6), took a city bus. As was her custom, she sat in the back. The driver informed her he could not move the bus until she moved to the white section in the front. She moved to the front, but swore she would never move to Florida. My uncle won that argument, and they both lived out their lives in Miami, but she remained true blue and colorblind until the end of her life.
Once when I was visiting her, my cousin, her only son, came over. He had moved to Fl. as a young man. All of a sudden, he starts railing about "the blacks." My aunt rolled her eyes and dragged her arthritic body out of the room. I told him he was disrespecting cultural differences just like people do when they make nasty remarks about us (Jews,) and that he had become quite a racist. No way, he boomed, "they" just expect to be handed everything.
Later, my aunt told me she hated it there, but her grandchildren were attentive and loving and nothing like their father, and she was right. They are both still in Florida trying to turn this ugly tide.
